Every great boxer, from beginners to world champions, builds on the same foundation. Learning the core boxing punches for beginners is the first step to developing real skill. Boxing coaches often number punches 1 through 6 to call combinations quickly.
Before You Punch: Stance and Guard
- Feet about shoulder-width apart, lead foot forward
- Knees slightly bent, weight balanced
- Hands up by your cheeks, chin tucked
- Elbows in to protect your body
1. The Jab
A fast, straight punch with your lead hand. The jab measures distance, sets up combinations and keeps opponents honest. Snap it out and bring it straight back to your face.
2. The Cross
A straight punch with your rear hand. Rotate your rear hip and pivot your back foot to generate power. The cross is often your strongest punch.
3. The Lead Hook
A short, curved punch with your lead hand. Keep your elbow at about shoulder height, rotate your hips and pivot your lead foot. It's devastating when thrown correctly.
4. The Rear Hook
The same motion with your rear hand. It's less common than the lead hook but useful in combinations.
5. The Lead Uppercut
An upward punch with your lead hand, generated by dipping slightly and driving up through your legs. Great at close range.
6. The Rear Uppercut
An upward punch with your rear hand. Rotate your hip and drive up through your legs.

The jab. It's the foundation for nearly every combination.
How do I get more power?
Power comes from your legs and hips, not just your arms. Focus on rotation and balance.
Can I practice punches at home?
Yes. Shadowboxing in front of a mirror is a great way to reinforce technique.
