Footwork Fundamentals for Boxing and Martial Arts

By Rob Brice · October 4, 2026 · 6 min read

Ask any experienced coach and they'll tell you: great punches start from the ground up. Boxing footwork controls distance, sets up offense, powers your punches and keeps you safe. Here are the fundamentals every martial artist should master.

Why Footwork Matters

The Boxing Stance

Stand with feet about shoulder-width apart, lead foot forward and slightly turned in. Keep your weight balanced on the balls of your feet with knees soft.

Step-Drag Movement

The core rule: don't cross your feet.

The Pivot

Pivoting on your lead foot lets you change angles quickly. It's a powerful tool for getting out of the way and creating new attacking lines.

Cutting Angles

Rather than moving straight back, step at an angle. Angles help you avoid punches and set up counters.
